Proton doesn’t open source their app

Yes they do.

The apps can’t easily be installed via fdroid

Yes they can

Mail is a simple basic thing yet you can’t create an event offline with the official app

Data on your device is unencrypted. Your data is supposed to stay on Proton servers in Switzerland.

nor can you use another app with it.

Yes you can.

I’d suggest you do some more research.

hear that people, if you have an extremely unique request, proton might not be right for you.

vendor lock in? only if you suck at email.

I mean, sure exporting is a thing, but syncing wise, we have vendor lockin? And besides Mail of course, and besides mobile apps for Mail.

And it’s full of ads, and full of annoyances that are paywalled to fix.

You mean they don’t give you everything absolutely for free!? THOSE RAT BASTARDS!

Yes, that’s how free tiers work. I’m sorry this is apparently a new concept for you.

The only difference I see between my free account and my paid account is an 💎Upgrade button next to my settings button.

Try turning your signature off. The animations on the upgrade. The full page sales promos.

The proton mail signature only appears to be “required” in the mobile app. I have it disabled on the web interface.

And you’re complaining about this while using the free tier of a private service that doesn’t sell your data? If I were on the free tier I’d trade a signature and blockable pop-ups (uBO) for not being the product.
