I have been paying for Proton Unlimited for a very long time. About a year ago, they changed their prices for new users. currently it is $12/m, but I have to pay only $7.50/m, and yes, I pay monthly.
I use Proton Mail with 3 custom domains, and I am an always-on VPN user. The VPN connection is always great with good speeds, but sometimes bad pings, but have a bad Linux app (yes, the new one as well). I also use their drive, currently using ~200GB. I have never touched Proton Pass because I have a self-hosted Vaultwarden server.
But I am seriously considering discontinuing their service, specifically due to their poor Linux support. Their VPN app is shit, they don’t provide and not even developing a Linux app for Drive. But their are 2 reasons that make me continue their service. One, I do not really wish to self-host my email, and I do not want to use Tutanota, because I need Thunderbird. Two, there are no trusted VPN providers that give Indian IPs.
Check out Vaultwarden. It is the Bitwarden, but made in Rust. It is lightweight and yes, it does run in docker. You can use bitwarden’s apps and extentions with. You get all the enterprise edition features too.
Backing up the container data is very easy. Also, you can export the passwords in a json or csv file using the apps. If the server stops working, the passwords are still cached in the apps, and you can export them even if you are offline.
To share passwords, both accounts have to be on the same server. Or you can use the Bitwarden Send feature.
I have been self-hosting Vaultwarden for two years, and have corrupted my data once, because I updated the container very late, and it jumped multiple versions. No harm was done, as I backed up my passwords, using the app’s cache.
VPN GUI exists but it is terrible. CLI works great but still there are so many missing features. WireGuard and Stealth protocols, for example. Linux users are stuck with OpenVPN. There is no port forwarding either. It’s available on Windows, why not on Linux?
Then there is Drive Sync client. They released a beta for Windows and clearly stated that they have no plans on developing a Linux client in near future.
This can help you with the CLI - https://blog.aiquiral.me/proton-vpn-linux-guide/
Their tunnel uses TLS termination. When we use TLS/SSL certificates on a server, we want the data to be encrypted between your server and the clients connecting to it. When you use Cloudflare’s tunnel, that TLS connection is terminated, that is, decrypted on their servers and then it is re-encrypted and sent to your client. So, theoretically, they can look at all the data going through. But do they sniff in to your data, that is upto what you believe.
If you are self-hosting for privacy, this is a bad idea. Free solutions like Cloudflare and Tailscale all do TLS termination. What you want is TLS pass through. You can rent a small VPS and set up TLS pass through using something very simple, like HAProxy, NGINX Proxy etc.
There is an extension called LibRedirect that does this. It’s customisable, as in, we can set if we want to redirect to piped or invidious, and which specific instances to use. Not only just YouTube but other services like GitHub to Gothub, Twitter to Nitter, reddit to libreddit etc. The default settings are already great.
Edit - added the link.
That conversion isn’t accurate at all, at least in the cities I have been. I used to trust OSM a lot, but it led me to wrong places a few times. I use Organic Maps, which is based on OSM, for general navigation, but I have to rely on Google Maps for finding precise locations. I use web interface only, for google maps, but OSM can be a pain in the butt, especially if others are dependent on me navigating them.
You’ve used android. You’ve used iOS. Time to get a Linux phone. I’d suggest PinePhone.
Edit - Take a look at this post Open Source sub-lemmy.
Host a Wordpress instance on a privacy respecting VPS like Najal.la, or even Hetzner is great. Just change the settings to remove Gravatar integration and do not use Google Fonts. There are a lot of plugins and themes that you can install, but many come with third-party scripts and/or trackers. So, make sure you keep an eye out for what you are installing.
My bank, for example, does not let us use any 2FA app we want. They have their own separate app, made for handling 2FA for that specific bank only.
And in general too, yes. Like Arogya Setu. The app we had to install to prove our vaccination status.
