I don’t think it’s an immediate threat, but its good to pre-emptively move just in case. I mean, Proton isn’t an Amazon. They are supposed to be a privacy company. You might be able to overlook Jeff Bezos praising a republican, but not when a Privacy company does the same thing. When you claim to be morally superior (like having encryption by default, and privacy), you should be held to a higher standard than the average capitalistic company. Amazon making that statement would be somewhat normal, they are a capitalist corporate for-profit so that’s to be expectwd, a non-profit, human rights group (which is what Proton practically is) making the same statement is just red flag valley.

I don’t think you need cloud services

I have 1TB of Tresorit in case my house burns down.

I’d just go Keepass. Password managers don’t need cloud to work. And Bitwarden could go rogue too.

Mailbox and Posteo doesn’t have their app in F-Droid 🤔

I know Tuta has, and just looked up Disroot, they also have…

Tuta has no averts. It basically the same as Proton. But one key thing I noticed, is that you cannot import or export your keys (as far as I know), where as with Protonmail, you could download your key, or upload your own generated keys to replace their key.

When Proton and Tuta (formerly known as Tutanota) were the biggest 2 that reddit recommended. And they were the two that are on the top of my mind.

I honestly have no clue what I’m doing, I just googled a bit, Namecheap and Cloudflare are the top two I found with WHOIS Privacy, But cloudflare is what I heard of so I’m just using this for now, don’t wanna do an entire week of research, domains seems to be transferable to another registar later. WHOIS Privacy means, if someone looks up your domain name, they can’t find your name or address (but law enforcement probabaly could with a warrant). You don’t want people showing up in your front door so you need the “Whois Privacy” feature. Theres also Njalla, which would hide your identity, but its officially registered under their founder’s name, so you gain privacy, but you also have to trust the guy to not steal your domain.

Or you could attempt to use fake names and addresses, but I’m not sure about the legak implications, so I’m not trying that, at the risk of losing my domains lol.

So I have like 2 domains right now (maybe more later), I just type the domain in Tuta, they give a list of “DNS” stuff you have to copy paste into your DNS settings. So I just google “Cloudflare DNS setting” and then copy-paste each thing into Cloudflare, then wait a bit, and Tuta shows it being set up, then click continue. And its done.

There’s also a “catch all” mailbox, which is basically just, you can makebuo any email with your domain and it’ll go to your inbox. Like you went to a new store in town, and they ask for your email, you give them NewStoreName@YourDomain.com and it’ll work, as with anything you put in front of the @ sign.

I never watched or read any tutorials, I kinda just… trial and error lol.

I’m moving to Tuta, and bought some domains to use as custom domains. Accidentally clicked yearly instead of monthly in Tuta (cuz I don’t want such a long commitment yet), and it doesn’t let me change it to monthly, so I have to message support and ask them to change it back to monthly, 24 hours has passed and still waiting for a response… Proton usually responds within 24 hours… 🤷‍♂️

Edit: In like 12 hours, it’d be 48 hours… so… 👀

I sent another email to make sure it went through.

If their response takes longer than like a week, I’m gonna have to look for something else…

set up my own mail server.

Unless you are like a very skilled computer expert, don’t.

Use an encrypted mail provider + custom domain.

I just set up one on Tuta (#NotSponsored), and bought a two year for a .com domain.

I don’t know coding, I suck at most techy things. I managed to set it up by just… following instructions.

Register domain + Payment.

Go to Tuta, get premium plan.

Go to Tuta’s settings, set up Custom Domain.

Copy Paste all the DNS configuration stuff.

Voila, easy.

If Tuta goes rogues, I’d find another one, change settings.

If domain registar goes bad, I’d transfer it to another one.

TLDR: You’re better off just using a mail provider + Custom Domain

Having a PhD in particle physics doesn’t mean he knows anything about US Politics.

You can still talk to customer support to cancel…

(Or even charge back if you are willing to lose the email)

Yea, that isn’t gonna fly in modern day Lemmy. I’m sure there are non-tankie programmers that are willing to work on a fork, that’d definitely splinter Lemmy into 2 different “fediverses”, one under the tankie branch, one under the new non-tankie fork. I don’t think the devs want that. They seem to be very anti-corporate, and such a move that would splinter the Lemmy community would only benefit big tech.

Honesly, Lemmy Dev’s political opinion is irrelevent, thet don’t control anything outside of lemmygrad and lemmy.ml

Reminds me of all the “I haven’t see you since last year” jokes after xmas / new year breaks in school

Louis Rossmann also has “Libertarian” vibes… 😖

Maybe. Can board members of a non-profit “impeach” another board member?

Not sure if they have the guts to oust its founder.

I wouldn’t say he’s being “Maga”, but this is some “Libertarian” dumb fuck that has no clue what’s happeneing in politics.

If you scroll through his twitter, he did praise some things that Biden did, so it seems like he might just be bootlicking whoever is in power as appeasement

Edit: He also seems to be pro-Ukraine and supports the activists in Hong Kong, so basically a Libertarian that leans to the political right. (And also being a huge dumbass)

To protect against those pesky “hackers” that want to steal your information at public wifi?

Nah. Enable HTTPS-Only mode and VOILA! (Make sure to x out of browsers the moment you see a warning screen)

To post “I HATE [Insert Name of Country Leader] and I hope he/she dies and go to hell!” on a forum?

Hell fucking yes. Especially if you are in an authoritarian country. Use both VPN and Tor, don’t use real names. Even in democratic countries, still use VPN, since power is always shifting. What’s legal today might not be legal tomorrow.

Do people with genetic disorders that cause them to grow extra fingers now have legal immunity?

Brb, I’m gonna need to find one of those people to help me with my bank robbery (/s)
