I used to have both, because the beta didn’t have necessary features like archive but did have threaded convos. Now “both” of my Proton Mail apps are the same app but I have 2 icons. They both open the same thing.

ProtonMail had a special beta app which you needed to download directly from them and wasn’t on the Play Store. Then the Play Store app also has a “join the beta” option which you can opt into. I was opted into that. Even then, the one from the Play Store was not the same as the other.

A week or so ago they pushed an update so that the “join the beta” version from the Play Store was the same as the special one you needed to download from Proton.

That was a huge mistake IMO since the special one is extremely rough and lacking in basic features, and has bugs.

So can I not run both in parallel anymore? I liked keeping up with the development of the beta but, as you said, it’s not usable on it’s own. If I have to only use one, it’ll necessarily have to be the non-beta.

What I did was remove myself from the “join the beta” option in the Play Store. That didn’t trigger a new update by itself, so I had to uninstall and reinstall from the Play Store. That got me back to the non-beta version. If you do that then you should be able to have a stable version from the Play Store and a beta from direct download.

Logically this sounds like it’d work, so I tried it. Didn’t work. Then I un-installed both apps. I was already out of the beta in the play store from the first time around. Reinstalled it from the play store , - it’s the beta. I can’t get out!

Edit: my only theory is that it takes a while for the play store to recognize that I left? I’m going to stay out of it and leave it un-installed and try again later.

Edit 2: Update. Waited an hour. Reinstalled from the play store. Still in the Beta. It’s like purgatory

Edit 3: aha! I uninstalled, downloaded the apk from here and it worked! https://github.com/ProtonMail/proton-mail-android/releases

Yeah, that could be. I left beta, then a while later uninstalled and reinstalled and it worked for me. Might try clearing the app cache for both too.

Weird. I’d suggest you uninstall and re-install if that’s possible. Could be a beta issue somewhere. I’m not seeing it in my own device, that’s for sure, and I removed both (production from Playstore and first manual beta apk) to get the actual beta from the playstore, if that helps.
