I’ve heard criticism of the desktop app before as well, maybe they’ll finally rework it?

I also came across this one, but I haven’t heard of this one before. I’ve heard Netguard mentioned in the past

Rethink: DNS + Firewall + VPN (Firewall apps, use WireGuard VPN, monitor network, block malware, change DNS.)

https://f-droid.org/packages/com.celzero.bravedns/

Is there a good way to prevent apps/programs from accessing the internet, or restrict it to VPNs only?
I'm asking for Android specifically, but I'm curious what else is out there. For example, some apps work without internet but may use it if it's available. I might want to block that without having to turn off wifi, force stopping it, and wiping the cache/data. Similarly, maybe I only want to use the app over a VPN and want to prevent accidentally opening it without first turning the VPN on.

A lot of it might come down to individual tasks or personal preference.

Personally I liked Claude better than GTP3.5 for general queries, and I have yet to explore the other two

Do you have location services turned on? Or perhaps something weird with the Sling app permissions

Oh that’s smart, I should look into that

Yep

I feel like this would help more than it would hurt, but I wish there was a way to force a full shutdown as needed. If someone is in danger, they shouldn’t have to discard or destroy the phone completely to stay safe

I think it’s on all the browsers

Instance Assistant

It’s very misleading (or straight up false), see the other comments

Something fun I spotted while checking links: a comment from the Signal subreddit linked to the Lemmy discussion that I was looking for. Lemmy’s SEO isn’t as good, but I found it indirectly anyways

Ah not this again (EDIT: see this link for a better explanation than mine: https://lemmy.ca/comment/5401873 )

Your source there lists it as:

CIA → RFA → OTF → Signal

My understanding is that the CIA operated a news agency in the 50s, then decades later the 2012 president of the news agency started the Open Technology Fund to “help better protect reporters and sources for the news organization with enhanced digital security technology”. That organization made (publicly documented) investments in projects including the Tor Project and Signal. Even if someone thinks the OTF is sinister, the total amount over 5 years was $3M.

Condensing all that into “Signal is CIA funded” is silly, and it’s even sillier to imply that Signal is controlled by the CIA as a honeypot.

Also, it’s open source. Given how popular it is, and how much constant scrutiny the code is under, we should notice any issues that pop up.

Good to know, thank you :)

Setting my name now

This popped up on the desktop app, I don't see anything on mobile. I haven't closed the window in case I can't get it back Not sure what to pick for my username either lol

If you’re picking from the popular ones, Garmin is usually recommended even with their cloud services enabled. I know some models allow you to stop syncing data indefinitely. I assume it should be possible to only sync through gadgetbridge or the cable, but I haven’t checked extensively. For example, if you just set it up without connecting it to Garmin services

If you make a list of what specific features you need/want/avoid, it might help narrow things down

Would this just be the screen when you don’t have any emails, or does it pop up on top of the emails? It’s a bit hard to read on the gif because it keeps moving

If it blocks you from doing things, then that’s bad. If it’s just the “you don’t have any emails, this is how you can get started”, then I don’t really see the problem.

Likely more users would want to see the options listed there, and people that don’t want to link it can just ignore it till an email comes in. I’m assuming it disappears when emails come in

I think it’s a matter of support. Where I am, major banks aren’t supported and neither is transit. I’ve used the feature once

That being said, I’d probably use it if it did

This is great! The length and tone was perfect IMO

Hope you guys do these for a while to come :)

Agreed, I didn’t think to do this but I might go through my list when I get time

While companies may secretly hold on to the data, it would also prevent future apps from abusing the data if I accidentally allow contact permissions

It’s a little quieter now, I think because everyone is busy with life stuff. I was planning to work with the mods in !askmeanything@lemmy.ca when I had time to get it rolling again (with locals to start off)

Is it possible you tried Keepass? I thought Bitwarden’s UI was pretty good and modern, and that’s one of the silly reasons why I picked it over keepass long time ago

I’m not your target for the question, since I haven’t ever tried Unlimited

Bitwarden is very solid for a password manager, and it works well for my family

You could compare prices between just ProtonMail+Bitwarden (or other manager)+VPN of choice?

I have a few friends and family on Signal. Pretty much everyone uses other services too (including myself) but Signal is installed on a few

  • I talk to some friends / family on Signal exclusively. They either already cared about it, or they’re close enough that they trust my recommendation / still don’t care but want to put in the effort

  • I talk to some friends / family on Signal only when we want to have a more private conversation

  • Some people won’t ever be convinced, I talk to them on other services or in person when privacy is important. I set up boundaries to protect myself, and people usually respect that.

This way I protect myself while respecting other people’s choices.

For you I’d recommend focussing on the second option. When you need to talk privately, ask the person to install it and give a short explanation for why it’s better. If they do, then great it’s installed and it’ll get used once in a while. Maybe they will see other people and build up the network. If they don’t install it, then suggest an alternative like talking in person

Well sure, but encrypted backups are still secure. What’s not secure (or private rather) is someone realizing they can’t have a backup of important chats and going back to Facebook Messenger.

Backups are a thing on Android, and they’re planned for iOS. It just hasn’t happened yet. People can choose what they want to backup and when they want disappearing messages turned on.

The process is a bit involved on mobile. Setting up a backup location, using a third party app to sync updates and deletions etc. It could be simplified by integrating with common cloud storage services (the encrypted file)

Also iOS doesn’t have backups at all last I checked. If you lose your phone the messages are toast

The biggest thing for me right now is backups

I can’t comfortably recommend it to people that will lose access if they lose their phones / upgrade without following the process perfectly

And if you want it to look like an app, you could use Native Alpha (on Fdroid)

This is a comment from a random user, not the pinned explanation on that link, but I thought it was funny

CBC can’t be trusted. Propaganda state media for the Liberals.

lol what

I’m not sure I understand

If everyone can see what I upvote, then I’m going to take that into consideration before voting. If it was private, then I wouldn’t worry about it and vote whenever I want to.

Overall this might be a good thing because it exposes bad behaviour, such as downvoting the person who disagrees with you.

This might be a problem if, for example, there’s a post critical of moderators / admins. You might want to upvote it, but worry about getting banned. If your Lemmy profile can be linked to your real identity, you might worry about real world consequences too.

The internet is a messy place and I like my privacy

I think people will feel more comfortable voting if it wasn’t made public. Same reason we add privacy booths during elections, or put our heads down in class when voting on simple things

Appreciate the thoughts, it gives me more to think about. I’ve also been avoiding controversial subject matter and I think I’ll avoid it even more now.

I do think the Fediverse needs to improve privacy and ease of use for alts. I’ve seen a lot of stuff over the years on Reddit that an authoritarian government would love to get their hands on. I guess the fediverse, by design, can’t be private? I worry that someone who doesn’t know better will get hurt because they don’t understand the risks.

All the more reason to join trusted instances with solid admins, and to keep your Lemmy profile separate from your real identity.

A possible workflow right now might be to browse on one account, and post comments from another. Boost on Reddit made that easier, but I don’t think the Lemmy one does that yet

I think the table should be off site on a guide website

As for the rendering, which app are you using? I’ve found that too (Boost misses most rendering for me)

From when I was asking about it, I think it’s only the instance admins that can see the details. It would be nice to have this information clearly outlined somewhere, so people know and aren’t surprised.

Maybe a table like

What can each person see
