I finally got around to trying it, and I’ve realized that the “open with” option is absent from the right-click menu for some reason. I’m trying to find out why, but so far no luck. I checked the registry key, and it’s intact and should be giving me the option. I hate Windows.

Edit: So after a lot of searching, I discovered that I must have had Notepad++ set up wrong, because I found a registry entry from Notepad++ in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ .bat

I didn’t want to just delete the value, so I ended up uninstalling Notepad++ from my PC entirely, and the “open with” option returned, and the registry entry disappeared. Notepad++ is a popular app, so I feel like a lot of the people I found by searching who have the same problem might have this app installed with the registry entry to remove “open with” from the .bat file extension specifically. I knew something was up because I tested other files on my PC, and “open with” was still there. So frustrating, but your solution works now! Thanks!

I too am sorry for the late reply, but thank you so much! I’ll try it again asap.

I totally agree with you about Windows. Even Microsoft’s forums are generally unhelpful if you don’t want to use their OS they way they think you should use it. I’m gradually switching to Linux and will not be using Windows 11. Whatever minor conveniences I may miss out on are worth moving to an OS built with users in mind and with a friendly community of people who are actually helpful.

I just used it. It was easy enough to edit/remove metadata, which is all I want to do for now. It reminds me a bit of a Windows 95 era app, which is the time period when I became acclimated to Windows software.

Anyway, it took just a few seconds to do what I want to do. I’m still quite baffled why removing/editing metadata in a mp4 is unsupported in Windows. It seems like such a basic thing.

Hi, Thank you so much for your help, but when I double click the .bat file, it just opens it inside Notepad++

I made sure to select “all files” and use the .bat extension, but no dice.

Any idea why?

Here’s what my folder looks like with the mp4 renamed “INPUT.mp4”

Here’s what my .bat document looks like

I’m lost…

I’ll try this, thanks! It’s really surprising though that you can’t just delete the metadata like you can with a normal file. Is there something unusual about mp4 format that disallows this?

Haven’t heard of either one of these, thanks! Musicbrainz Pickard looks pretty intuitive based on the screenshots, and I like that it’s also available for Linux. I’ll try that one first.

I’ve downloaded FFmepg in the past, but I’m too dull and non-techy to understand it. I’m bound to royally fuck up anything in command prompt. Is there a setting I can use in Windows to allow me to remove the metadata by right clicking like I can with documents or images?

I figured out I can send it to myself on Molly, and the metadata will be automatically removed, but surely there’s a better way to do this very basic thing?

Later, I’ll have access to my laptop that runs Linux, so I’ll see if it works there to do it in a more civilized manner.

What’s an easy way to remove metadata from a .mp4 file? [Windows 10]
When I try using the normal way in Windows 10, it throws an error. I have some videos I uploaded to a YouTube channel a long time ago, and I'd like to share them, but first I need to remove the metadata. The normal way I do this for images is to right click and select "Remove Properties and Personal Information," but when I try to do this with an mp4, it doesn't succeed. I've checked the security settings to make sure I have full control over this file, which I do, but it seems impossible to remove this metadata. I've tried saving-as using VLC and even tried within different folders, but nothing works. Surely there must be a tool to remove metadata from a mp4 just as there is with an image, but none of my searches have been helpful. I'd much appreciate it if anyone can help!

I finally got my own modem – the SB8200 – so I finally feel like I’m free of the grasp of that horrible experience. Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, both of them alter search results based on locational data rather than merely responding to user input

The only ones I’ve found that don’t are Mojeek and some SearXNG instances

The link that supposedly proves Mozilla has “ceased caring about technology” indicates nothing of the sort.

This whole article seems completely unhinged and untrustworthy.

Yep, I actually got locked out of an old account where I didn’t use my real name. I was also friends with a drag queen who used her professional name, the name everybody knew her by, for her account. She was forced to show her ID and then change it to her real name. I could never get used to that because no one ever called her by her real name.

Personally, I’d never show them my ID, no matter what.

Libredirect user here (casual).

All of this only makes sense if you’re redirecting to a frontend, right? Not an alternative platform? For instance, it would be nice to redirect all Goodreads links to Bookwyrm, but I’m not sure if this is possible. (Already got it set to redirect to Biblioreads, but just curious since Bookwyrm is what I actually use.)

Yeah, now that I look I see there are a lot of buildings not shown at all

It probably varies by location. I live in a pretty small town, and StreetComplete hasn’t asked me for house numbers yet at all.

I just use uBlock Origin in Firefox, and I never see ads. There’s nothing to keep up with – it’s been uBlock Origin for a long time now

I don’t believe the glasses you linked will do so either lol

I doubt they work, and they’re definitely not worth the price imo

I can get a pair of prescription sunglasses for less than that

This is the second “article” I’ve read from this site that turned out to be an ad. This made me check OP’s post history, and it’s nothing but promotional content from this one site. I feel like this should be reported. This is supposed to be a community-driven forum with genuine content, not somebody’s advertising platform.

Ah so similar to the metal screen that keeps microwaves from escaping a microwave oven.

I know people who raise chickens, so maybe I can hit then up for some wire

I know, but like I’ve said before, that would also be a bad choice for me regarding my own personal privacy.

If I felt comfortable doing so, I would have named them immediately because I’m utterly disgusted with this shit.

I deleted the app as soon as I got a normal router put in place and my network set up the way I want. I’m not sure why I even thought the app would do what I wanted, but the agent deliberately deceived me.

Same here. There’s just no way around it for me.

I actually do love my job and my employer, but I’m disgusted by Zoom. Almost every webinar I attend is on Zoom as well.

We’re aggressively backward where I live.

Does chicken wire actually work for this?

I couldn’t even access the Netgear settings without creating a Netgear account, so I returned it. My friend who has a Netgear said this didn’t used to be the case, but I could not bypass that requirement.

Ooo, this is open source too? I’ve got to be honest, I’m a bit out of my depth, but I’m going to try to learn and understand.

Thanks for the recommendation. Kind of a bummer that my router isn’t supported by either this or openwrt.

It is, and connecting the new router I got, I realize that what I have from the ISP is actually pretty substandard. I can’t wait until I can return it.

I was about to comment that I don’t know how to do that, but it looks like openwrt actually has its own forums.

Still not ready to do this on the spot, but this is another thing worth educating myself about, thanks

Another user recommended an ASUS. I’m probably not going to find one here on Facebook or Craigslist unless I travel to a bigger city, but I’ve had good luck on ebay. In fact, one of the reasons I lack money is that I just bought a laptop off ebay. I … kinda wish I hadn’t done that now, but who knew?

Like I told someone else, I’m probably going to prioritize getting my own modem now, but whenever I decide to upgrade my router, I can get an ASUS and then give this to a friend or neighbor and help them get set up.

Damn, you’re not wong! I’ve had this ISP at this address since 2019, and before that we had them at another address for 4 years. I could have probably bought my own modem and router several times over.

This would have still been within my budget, but I was going to keep thinking about this until I had it set up, so I decided at one point to buy one locally.

First I bought the Netgear AC1900 because I thought “how bad can it be,” but when it wouldn’t let me proceed without creating a Netgear account, I immediately returned it for the TP-Link.

You’re right that it’s better to invest in things that last, but if I decide to upgrade, then hey, I can help a friend or neighbor with this same ISP “upgrade their equipment” and get them out of the lion’s den as well.

Bookmarking this for reference when I’m ready to buy a modem

I actually just went and bought a TP-Link AX1500 lol

I move fast. Eventually I’ll be getting my own modem as well, but at least I got things close to how I had them before. In fact, seems even better!

Best of all, I’ve deleted that crazy app off my phone. I’m going to save your comment because then I’ll know which modem to get when I have more money!

That looks nice, but ubiquiti is way outside what I can reasonably afford, unfortunately

The agent I chatted with said I can, and I asked him 3 times in 3 different ways and saved the chatlog

My ISP has taken total control of my network
This is very troubling, and I'm not even sure where to start. I recently received an email message from my ISP which alerted me to an incoming update. I didn't worry too much since this is obviously not the first update they've ever pushed through. However, after this update, I noticed that my guest connections and some other things had changed / disappeared. I logged on to my router, and I immediately noticed my custom password had been reset to the default. No problem, I entered it. At this point, I saw that all of my options were greyed out. I could change the password, which I did, but nothing else. I immediately called my ISP. I was told that I would have to use their app now, so as much as I dislike using proprietary phone apps, I conceded and installed the app through the Play store. However, the agent was not entirely honest with me. I still can't bifurcate my 2.4g and 5g connections, nor can I add or remove any guest connections. I immediately enabled "privacy mode" via the app, which purportedly prevents information from being collected by something called "HomePass," and I "Delete[d] Guard events" whatever the hell that means, but this seems really troubling. I can no longer access my modem/router settings via the normal interface, but have to use an Android app? There is only one other ISP in my area. They have much worse/slower service, but should I switch, or is this just the "new normal"? Does what I'm describing even make sense? I'm not a tech expert, but I feel like I've self-taught myself how to navigate these settings, and learned from others in online forums, but now ... *an Android app?* I'd appreciate any advice. I'd even be willing to purchase my own modem/router instead of using the one from my ISP, if that fixes this mess. Edit: So I need my own router, at least. I did some research, and these are the ones I can get locally that are within my budget: - TP-Link Archer AC1900 Dual-Band Mu-Mimo Wi-Fi Router with Gigabit Port - Linksys AC1200 Dual Band WiFi 5 Router - TP-Link Archer AX1500 WiFi 6 Dual-Band Wireless Router | up to 1.5 Gbps Speeds - TP-Link Archer C54 | AC1200 MU-MIMO Dual-Band WiFi Router - NETGEAR - Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Router, 1.9Gbps (R6900) **I’VE BEEN WARNED AGAINST NETGEAR THOUGH IN OTHER FORUMS** - TP-Link | AX1800 4 Stream Dual-Band WiFi 6 Wireless Router | up to 1.8 Gbps Speeds - TP-Link Archer AX3000 | 4 Stream Dual-Band WiFi 6 Wireless Router | up to 3 Gbps Speeds - Linksys E7350 AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Router Am I right in thinking the TP-Link AX3000 is best? Edit 2: At first, I bought the Netgear AC1900, which seemed like a great deal. Turns out it was unusable without creating a netgear account, so I returned it in exchange for the TP-Link Archer AX1500, and it appears to be working! I got everything set up pretty close to the way it was before, except even better. Once I save money, I'll also invest in a different modem and return this one to my ISP. This was a big wake-up call for me in terms of privacy. I never listened to people saying not to use your ISP's equipment because I always trusted my ISP (it's not one of the big name ones). **Never** trust a company. Lesson learned. I appreciate all the responses I got! This community is great!

Why does Play Store prompt me to update Bitwarden?
I installed Bitwarden from F-Droid, but I happened to notice yesterday that Bitwarden was in my list of apps with updates available from Play Store, even though I installed it via F-Droid. Why would that be? I know this is a better question for the Bitwarden forums, but I don't have enough street cred there to make a post.
