I’d like to be able to keep up with an older parent (completely with their consent), but do not want it to be two way as so many such apps seem to be. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Maybe one day someone writes it for matrix? In the meantime telegram is good enough.

Locus is the new cool kid on the market https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/app.myzel394.locus I have no idea how trustworthy it is but it looks promising.

Airtags if you’re an iphone user. The tech is pretty cool, I use it to track my stuff when traveling.

Yep was also about to suggest this. We use it to track my wife’s grandma, as she got lost already one time. As she lives in the city so far there was always an iPhone nearby that sent her location. We attached it to her keys, as she always has them on her.
