First one that came to mind when I saw the title TBH. First it was period tracking apps, now this. Scary state of things

I use FreeOTP+ and it requires biometrics to open

This is what I use. Also supports exporting/importing data to and from Gnome Authenticator so you have 2FA on your computer too 👍

Not directly an answer to your question, but this is a really nice gesture. I’d appreciate it a ton personally

I store my totp seeds in a separate, rarely used password manager, which then follows me on an “emergency USB” - hopefully something I won’t need to use at all

Removing it can cause a bootloop in some cases, likely something in the boot process is looking for it and reinstalling that app if missing. Google’s play services recently started doing that with permissions that are revoked with root

Should be removable on a non-stock ROM though

Yes, it’s the newer version of the two. OP has an older device

I switched to Osmand when my bike computer got stolen and tbf I prefer Osmand, especially with the widgets and stuff set up for the cycling profile

Slippery slope IMO - also won’t do anything for criminals, they’ll just put on a mask or helmet.

The real fix is somewhere closer to more humans, not more tech

We hope that Google will change its stance and give people the choice and tools to protect themselves from pervasive tracking technology and invasive advertising.

“Unlikely” would be an understatement in terms of Google ever being accepting of adblockers. That web attestation/DRM stuff is really telling

IMO this seems like common knowledge for the PG community?

If you’re karma farming, please kindly note that concept doesn’t exist on Lemmy, and you could end up being penalised for spam.

This is the case for me too. OSM has so much more detail compared to Google Maps, it’s my go to for actual navigation

Google maps I just use for public transport, and local business discovery.

Nope, they are computers that run a Java-based OS.

If we want to talk about smartcards in general (contactless, chip-based, dongle-based) some of them only store/retrieve data, some only store a single unchangeble identifier, but others like banking cards & transit cards tend to run a small operating system that you can talk to, and even run applications on.

With a cheap USB card reader, you can actually interact with the operating system on a chip-based bank card using Linux

A ducky USB with integrated Wifi will handle that limitation nicely 🙃

I commonly hear to not browse some websites from a Macbook, once some sites check the browser + screen resolution, their prices go 📈🤑

I’m interested in knowing too!

Google messages also has some annoying moments where the RCS will just quit working for no reason at all, first falling back from e2ee to standard RCS which is very annoying, and in some cases it will drop even further back to SMS if you haven’t prevented it from doing so in the settings.

The messages app feels great to use, but it’s privacy attempts aside from the e2ee are just not there IMO

Something similar happened with youtube-dlc, allowing yt-dlp to be born

I use this too - why was this downvoted? Is there something we’re missing with Relay?

Raddle user learns how the Internet works 🤯

In all seriousness though, although this is a concern, in Email in particular the solution most choose is to just disable images, so it isn’t really a sincere comparison IMO.

We could maybe mitigate this with…

  • Proxying & caching - Instance would cache a copy of the commented image and serve it from there, blocking the IP of the user from being exposed. This could introduce some additional latency and fill up server storage faster
  • CSP Header & Local caching - Client could block the name of the instance from being transferred, and also cache a copy of the image locally. This doesn’t protect the user’s IP address in any way, but would hinder the ability to count how many times a particular IP has viewed/accessed a post
  • Shared Lemmy image proxies - Image requests are proxied through a randomly selected Lemmy image proxy. This would ‘hide’ the origin IP to all but the volunteer proxy provider. I’d personally be willing to host a few of these if this ever became a thing

I’ve disabled play store on my device… sadly can’t delete it as it’s the only app than can update Carrier Services for RCS

You should be able to from your Google account, if you head to the “data and privacy” tab in your account settings and go to “Web and app activity”.

Apps with microtransactions may not work if they’re downloaded from Aurora (as far as I know, apps can check what store they’re downloaded from), but it’s worth a try anyway just in case.

When I discovered the Play Store history in my google settings, that creeped me out completely.

Thankfully I had already switched to Aurora and F-Droid by that point

I currently use this on my FP3 to record calls (Installed via a Magisk module)

It works pretty well, however OP do test with both bluetooth and wired headphones as those can be hit or miss. Also, sometimes Duo video calls are recorded and sometimes they’re completely silent.

Is the bot currently online looking for new YouTube links all over Lemmy, or do we need to start up our own if we’re interested in using this in a community?

Just wondering as I couldn’t see a readme on the repo to find out.

Being preinstalled as a system app (even more permissions available, such as call recording on android 7+) and regular users not knowing Meta Services is still there after they delete other Meta apps like FB, whatsapp and instagram.

As for its capabilities specifically, I have no idea…

A lot of the arguments on that subreddit seem agenda driven from my perspective. While there are real concerns (user data sent and stored outside of Europe, right to be forgotten as mentioned by another user) the people there seem really fixated on the developers specifically and their beliefs, as well as deletion of user data.

If any one of the users there put their money where their mouth is and explained in a logical, sensible, neutral way to the devs why Lemmy should send federated deletion requests for example (claims made in that thread that Lemmy doesn’t, I haven’t verified if this is the case myself), the devs would probably take it on board the same way they removed the mandatory hard coded slur filter.

At the end of the day though, Kbin and Raddle seem like a solution to the general consensus in that thread, yet they get very little mention. The majority of the participants chose to bash rather than to fix, forcing their views on others inconsiderate of people’s threat models, and while they have every right to do so, a community with that kind of closed minded perspective is not something I’m into. I’d rather they stay on Reddit 👍

As for me personally… Lemmy could be better, but as a federated network with no need to be supported by ads, no API restrictions, as well as public mod logs for transparency & accountability, I really like it and interested in seeing where it goes. There are inevitably going to be issues, and a lot of the discussions I’ve seen here on Lemmy show an interest in improving things, vs reddit discussions where it’s the opposite.

Another Jerboa user here, pretty neat app but there are times where it becomes a little unresponsive on my device. Feels pretty similar to Infinity which is something I like.

The lemmyBB project from that list seems pretty neat though, could be an old-school way to browse lemmy on a desktop and might even benefit some communities depending on the primary format of content.

Hoping we get some more Android app variety for Lemmy, although imo we’re spoiled for choice when looking at available apps for other federated software
