Cloudflare typically provides DDOS protection to websites, as well as CAPTCHAs and preventing bots from accessing sites, and can speed up connections through use of their CDN, among other things they offer.

People mostly dislike Cloudflare to my understanding because at the end of the day, they’re a giant US big tech company with a pretty massive amount of centralized control over the internet. I personally avoid them where possible, and know a lot of others wish to as well due to it.

Kagi is so good, I just wish they’d lower the price…

Interested in more info about Brave Search. How is their claim of having an own index “doubtful”, and how do they have “extreme” censorship?

It will make your connection more private and secure, but I don’t think its a major improvement or worth using for most people due to the downsides.

selling data

When has Brave ever sold data? I’ve seen other people claim this here on Lemmy too and I don’t understand where it’s coming from, I know Brave has had controversies but they’ve never sold user data, I’d love to see at least a shred of evidence for this claim, it’s just FUD.

Please never do this! Read this thread from the developer of uBlock Origin. Using multiple content blockers together like this can and will cause issues, as well as will increase fingerprinting, etc, and there’s no gain or benefit at all from doing so.

I would disable Brave’s built-in ad/tracker blocking (leave the rest of the Shields’ functionality enabled), and would solely use uBlock Origin, and remove the other extensions. (You could even just stick to Brave’s built in ad/tracker blocking if you want to, but I just prefer uBlock Origin for its advanced features and compatibility)

As far as Decentraleyes goes, its essentially abandoned. You can use LocalCDN instead if you wish to do so, though its privacy benefits are debated. I mainly use it since I use uBlock Origin in Hard mode (which it complements uBo very nicely in both Medium or Hard Mode), and for the performance boost it gives, but its up to you. Ghostery and DDG Essentials should definitely be removed. (While DDG Essentials isn’t only content blocking, its other features are also just completely redundant and unnecessary with Brave)

The only reason I haven’t just flat out installed LineageOS on my NVIDIA Shield TV is that it’d cause me to lose Dolby Vision & AI Upscaling. I know if I built a PC box unfortunately it won’t have these features either.

I’m currently just using the Shield with all Google apps and other garbage removed through ADB. Isn’t ideal but seems to work well enough without losing Dolby Vision or AI Upscaling or anything like that. That’s what I’d recommend if you stick with this Android TV.

Yes, Private DNS carries over between profiles in my testing, just VPN that doesn’t
